PLANNING YOUR TRIP

Roche Harbor is located on the Northwest tip of San Juan Island in Washington State.

San Juan Island is one of many islands in North Puget Sound and is one of the San Juan Archipelago's largest.

While much of the island is pastoral, San Juan has probably the most diverse terrain in the islands. Farmland valleys comprise the center of the island; expanses of forests, rocky cliffs, and small mountains can be found on the north end around Roche Harbor; and wide open, windswept landscape can be found to the south.

Whether coming by boat and docking in one of our world-class marina slips, flying in on a private plane and landing on our airstrip, flying in by seaplane to our docks, or coming by Washington State ferry, you are sure to marvel at the beautiful scenery on your way.

To catch a Washington State ferry - the most popular way of getting to San Juan Island - you will need to head north from Seattle to Anacortes - (I-5 exit 230). The ferry leaves Anacortes bound for Friday Harbor from lane 4 of the ferry terminal. Waiting in line can be long during the summer months, so getting to the ferry terminal a couple hours before the ferry leaves is probably a good idea. Take your place in line and get out a good book and time will fly! Charlie's Restaurant is close by to help pass the time if you get hungry. The ferry trip takes approximately 1hour 20 minutes - sometimes a stop at Lopez Island will increase that time. Sit back, relax and breathe in the clear island air and marvel at the beautiful scenery.

Upon arriving in Friday Harbor, you will leave the ferry and find that transportation is available, if you did not bring your car with you. During the summer season, a San Juan Transit bus meets each ferry during daytime and will bring you out to Roche Harbor for a nominal fee. Bob's Taxi is also available for the 20 minute, 11 mile trip to Roche Harbor. If you brought your car with you, when on the ferry be sure to be back in your vehicle when it is announced the ferry is arriving at Friday Harbor. Follow the traffic onto Spring Street and take a right on Second Street (past King's Market). Continue up the hill to a 4-way stop (Community Theatre on your right). Go straight to the next 3-way stop. Take a right onto Tucker Avenue. Continue on this road (making sure you do not exceed the 25 mph speed limit in this part of town!) and it will become Roche Harbor Road. Enjoy the country scenery as you travel about 9-10 miles arriving at some stone arches that spell out Roche Harbor Resort. Continue to follow the signs and you will end up in the little historical village of Roche Harbor. If you are staying overnight, you will check in at the old Hotel de Haro and be given a key to your room.

Since the small village was built in 1886 - room for parking automobiles was not even considered in those times, so it has become a critical problem for our guests. Please follow directions for parking your vehicle as given you by our Front Desk or Village Parking Attendant.
