At Roche Harbor we enjoy helping our employees celebrate - especially when they are great employees who have been with us for a number of years!

Brent Snow, General Manager, wanted to wish our marina employee, Ester Hernandez, a happy birthday from the resort - so with the help of Julie Curley and Lisa Jackson, a surprise birthday party was planned for her.  Employees gathered on the decorated Lime Kiln Cafe deck where they all were treated to a free lunch in her honor.

Ester has been working at Roche Harbor for the last thirteen years, when she began in our Housekeeping department and now splits her time between working in Housekeeping during the winter, and in the Marina from May to November.   Ester and her husband, Filberto, make the best working team at Roche Harbor where they have both played a vital role for the resort and are both an integral part of the marina.   If you see them around the resort on your next visit, be sure to say "Hola"!

We wish you a very happy birthday, Ester, with many more great years to come!

If you are coming to Roche Harbor either this weekend or the next, you should definitely plan on making this event one of the things to do while on the island.

Island Stage Left - who have their home on the island - are performing Talley's Folly by Lanford Wilson in the 4-H building at San Juan County Fairgrounds in Friday Harbor - Thursday through Saturday (17th - 19th) at 7:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday (20th).   The last weekend they will be performing all four nights (24th - 27th) at 7:30 p.m.  This is a "don't miss" event.

It is a funny, touching play and the best acting you will see anywhere!

Set in 1944, towards the end of the Second World War "Talley's Folly" by Lanford Wilson is the Pulitzer prize-winning tale of two kindred souls who find each other by a riverbank on a summer evening in Lebanon, Missouri.

Playing Sally and Matt are Krista Strutz and Daniel Mayes.

For more information check out their website.

Here is some exciting news!  San Juan Outfitters will be opening up in the marina this month at Roche Harbor.   It will be Roche Harbor's new Whale Watch, Sea Kayak and Adventure Tour Company taking over from the very successful San Juan Safaris who have been in Roche Harbor for the past 12 years.

If you have been whale watching

or kayaking from Roche Harbor in the last ten

years or so you will be sure to recognize new owners Brian Goodremont, former Operations Manager for San Juan Safaris along with his wife Rachel, who is one of our very talented artists showing her work in the village artist booths.

San Juan Outfitters will continue to provide high quality tours from Roche Harbor, as well as from Friday Harbor.  They will specialize in half day and full day kayak tours, multi-sport tours and custom tours which can include kayaking, hiking and cycling.  Lots of fun for visitors to indulge themselves into and see just how beautiful the Northwest waters are.

Brian and Rachel are very familiar with the islands - they have been living on San Juan Island for the past 12 years and are very excited about their new project.  Brian will be involved with daily operations at Roche Harbor conducting whale watch and kayak tours while Rachel will work part-time at Roche Harbor and still pursue her portrait artist work for display in the artist booths.

If you are looking for adventure while visiting Roche Harbor - you have just found the perfect way!  Check out their new website for more information at www.sanjuanislandoutfitters.com.

If you would like to email Brian and Rachel you can reach them at info@sanjuanislandoutfitters.com or call him at 866-810-1483 or 360-378-1962 with your reservation.  Reservations are being taken now for this summer season and although the official opening of SJO is scheduled for April 18th, Brian will take out early season tours upon request - just give him a call and he will set you up for adventure!

Congratulations to you Brian and Rachel on your new project at Roche Harbor - we wish you lots of very successful whale watching and kayak tours!

As our spring/summer season gets rolling in 2008, our temporary employees start arriving from all corners of the world.

Allow us to introduce a new employee who will be working with Debbie Sandwith in The Company Store this season.

Meet Polypailin from Bangkok, Thailand who is with us on a J-1 Visa recruiting program. She is a 19 year old student who has just finished her second year in SrinakharinWirot University.  This is her summer break from University and her first time in the USA.  She will be working in the market until May 31st when she will return to Bangkok for her third year in school.  She told Debbie to let us all know "she loves it here, it is heaven for her and everyone is so nice".

We are all very happy to have you with us, Polypailin, and we hope you will enjoy your stay in the U.S.A. - welcome!

This is Ally - aged 21 months and Chloe - aged 4 years - who both enjoyed helping to color the many, many eggs that were going to be used for the Roche Harbor Easter Egg Hunt the next day.   This year was the 51st year of this great Roche Harbor tradition of easter egg hunting and 30 plus years of dyeing the eggs helped along by our favorite marina helper Julie Curley.

..."and then you do it like this!"

I am really getting the hang of this!

The Next Day...

Easter Day - March 23, 2008

Over 3,000 eggs were hidden by the Easter Bunny (aka marina staff) for the many children who attended our famous 51 year old tradition - Roche Harbor Easter Egg Hunt.  With a forecast of rain, the sun came out just in time for the hunt to begin.  The hunt started promptly at 1:00 p.m. and thirteen minutes later the golden and silver eggs were found and the majority of the colored eggs had been picked up.  The children were grouped in ages of 0-3, 4-6, and 7-11 with 1,000 eggs in each area.  Prizes for finding the gold and silver eggs were big easter baskets and stuffed animals.   We had a great turn out - and one might say the resort was hopping!

This is Ally, 21 months, with her very proud Grandma, Debbie Sandwith, Roche Harbor Company Store Manager.

"I'll help you!"

"Let me see how many I have!"

"I'm not too sure about this Easter Bunny thing!"

Thank you Debbie Sandwith and Debbie Frazier for the pictures!

Easter Day services at Our Lady of Good Voyage Chapel in Roche Harbor have been cancelled.   We are sorry if this causes an inconvenience for you - but there will be an Easter Mass held at Saint Francis Catholic Church in Friday Harbor at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday March 23rd - just a short drive away.

Our apologies.

If you are interested in history, then you will be interested in this!

This is a picture of John S. McMillin who was responsible for developing the rich lime deposits around Roche Harbor and forming a company called Roche Harbor Lime & Cement Company in 1886. Roche Harbor is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been for some time.  We are proud of our history at Roche Harbor and that is why we have named our fine dining restaurant after Mr. McMillin - McMillin's Dining Room.  At one time, the location of the restaurant was Mr. McMillin's home.

Just recently - in February of this year, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Friday Harbor, a neighboring town on San Juan Island, as one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations.

A wonderful website has been developed to show off Friday Harbor called,"Visit Historic Friday Harbor".  You can also find some of Roche Harbor's interesting history on this site and is well worth your while paying it a visit.  We hope you will come to the islands and check out all the historical ambiance - in Friday Harbor, as well as Roche Harbor.

Check out the new website here.

So you are coming to Roche Harbor for a visit and want to take a little bit of Roche Harbor back with you as a souvenir?

Check out the great Roche Harbor logo products that you can enjoy at home, as well as at Roche Harbor.  With some of the best tastes on the island, our Market Manager, Debbie, has chosen a variety of delicious products - such as dressings, salsas and oils that you have asked her for - so you can enjoy the Roche Harbor brand name at home.

Great as gifts, or to put in a basket for an "island theme" for your wedding, or to just enjoy for yourself once you get home.

Many varieties to choose from, as well as a Roche Harbor logo tote to carry it home in!

Check them out at Roche Harbor Market next time you are with us!

Many congratulations were in order last weekend as our very own Roche Harbor Market employee, Lisa Jackson, got married at Roche Harbor's Lady of Good Voyage Chapel, and became Mrs. Lisa Hawkins. In the picture are Jerome, Lisa and Lisa's mother, Carol, after the beautiful ceremony.

This was the first visit to Roche Harbor by Lisa's family who travelled from Coos Bay, Oregon, and Jerome's family from, Bellingham, Washington.  Lisa will continue working at the Market which will mark her 8th year at Roche Harbor!   Roche Harbor congratulates you, Mr. & Mrs. Hawkins, and wishes you both much happiness in the years ahead.

From a nice Californian Pinot Noir to a crisp Washington State Chardonnay, you can come up with some very distinctive bottles of wine.

Of course, if you are partial to the black currant aroma of an aged Cabernet Sauvignon - the store carries some excellent wine labels - just right for the evening spent in your suite or aboard your motor vessel.  Check them out next time you are with us!

BIRTHDAYS!  Time to celebrate birthdays at Roche Harbor!  Today is the birthday of one of our long-time, friendly Roche Harbor Market employees - Lisa Jackson!  This will be a week or so of parties for Lisa because she will be getting married at Roche Harbor on Friday 29th with her reception following in the Pavilion - plus a bachelorette party next Wednesday! I would love to be a fly on the wall for that one if her boss, Debbie, has anything to do with it!

Also with a birthday coming up on the 28th is everyone's charming "Sheriff of Roche Harbor" - along with many other titles bestowed upon him - Rod Wiese.  I missed his "BIG" birthday last year - so felt it was important for him to get recognized this year! We couldn't get through all of our government visa paperwork without you Rod!  You are the best!

HAPPY BIRTHDAYS to each of you - and we wish you all the very best for the future!

The Marina would like to thank all those people who took the time to join in our July 4th reservation lottery.
They received so many requests for reservations for July 4th - and have sent out notices to those of you who were lucky winners.  If you have not received a notice they want you to know that they will have their first-come-first-served Mediterranean style ties available - which also includes power and water.  They will also have some first-come-first-served slips, however, they won't know until closer to the holiday which ones will be available because this depends upon who is out of their permanent slip at that time.  They hate to turn boats away and will do their very best and get creative with the use of dock space for the special July 4th celebrations.

If you have any questions about the holiday - you can reach Kevin or Troy at the Marina... 1-800-586-3590.
