Canoe Journey 2004

by the Samish, Swinomish and Lummi Indian Nations on July 28, 2004.

Canoe Journey is an annual goodwill journey, in which American Indian and First Nations paddlers gather at a final destination with stops along

the way.

The final destination of this journey was Chemainus, near Ladysmith, B.C., Canada.  Roche Harbor was very proud to host one of the stops through the San Juan Islands.

Pictures of Trooping the Colors at Roche Harbor with re-enactors

of Battery D and the Canadian Royal Marines.

Be sure to catch this great event the same time each year, usually on the last weekend in August.

This is a picture from Encampment 2004 commemorating the peaceful joint occupation of San Juan Island by British and American forces from 1859 to 1872, and the final settlement of the Northwest Boundary dispute.  Activities include recreations of mid-19th century Royal Marine Light Infantry and U.S. Army camp life, demonstrations of music, blacksmithing, spinning and weaving, cooperage and carpentry, just to name a few. The public is invited to British Camp to view these demonstrations all weekend long.

Roche Harbor appreciates being part of this very historical weekend and we welcome the troops back again each year!  Also see them on Memorial Day weekend at Roche Harbor.
