Roche Harbor is fortunate to be located in the rain shadow of Washington State's Olympic Mountains. Sometimes referred to as the "banana belt", the San Juan Islands receive much less rain than the City of Seattle located about 100 miles to the south, and enjoys sun about 247 days of the year. This is due in large part because San Juan Island is "protected" by surrounding ocean waters, and mountain ranges. The ocean temperatures average 45 degrees in the winter and 52 degrees in the summer. San Juan Island also only receives about half the rainfall that Seattle does, an average of 29" per year. The average temperatures range from a high of 82 degrees F in the summer months and several days of below freezing in the winter time.

Of course, it varies from year to year, but most visitors will agree, the weather is better here than on the "mainland".
