Roche Harbor Resort’s McMillin’s Dining Room and Fireside Lounge Offer Half-Off All Bottle Wines
from October 27-November 30, 2005.

San Juan Island diners have a new reason to visit one of the area’s premier restaurants this winter. McMillin’s Dining Room will run its entire wine list for the month of November at half price—over 125 wines, from Dom Perignon to Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon to Leonetti Merlot—every day the restaurant is open.

The resort hopes that in the off-season, when servers and managers have more time to talk with guests, it can create a kind of wine lover’s culture. “Our intent is to encourage diners to try wines they would not normally buy,” says Sam Jacobson, Restaurant Manager and Wine Buyer. Jacobson states that none of the original prices on the wine list have been inflated to compensate for the reduction in prices. “In offering every wine on the list, every day we’re open, we hope to convey that message to our guests.” The list offers a wide selection of varietals and meritages within the theme of West Coast wines. Over half the wines are from Washington and Oregon.

Bill Shaw, Food and Beverage Director and Executive Chef, has collaborated with Jacobson to create a list that matches well with the Northwest-inspired cuisine offered by the restaurant. “When we work with the menus,” Chef Shaw says, “we create food that evokes flavors inherent in local products—seafood and lamb from the island, locally Northwest produce and herbs, and so on. We want our wine selections to represent that theme, as well.”

The promotion is timed with the transition of its operational schedule to five days a week, and also the opening of the Fireside Lounge in the private room adjacent to the main dining room. Last winter, Roche Harbor’s guests showed overwhelming enthusiasm for the Fireside Lounge, which balances the traditional elements of a bar with the comforting, fireside atmosphere of John S. McMillin’s old private study.

This winter, guests will be able to enjoy good wines at excellent prices as they sit back and enjoy a view of the harbor next to the crackling fire.
