- the ferry schedule changes three or four times each year.
- arrive at the ferry terminal at least one hour ahead. In the summer months and on Friday afternoons/evenings, two hours is better.
- ferry tickets are round-trip, and are only charged in Anacortes for the ride to Friday Harbor. The ride back is free!

The Washington State Ferry to the San Juan Islands is an amazing journey. At one to two hours, it’s a great transition from mainland worries to carefree island living. Soak in the scenic beauty that garnered the route #4 in the world, according to a travel writers’ association. It’s also a state recognized Scenic Byway, the only one in the state to involve a ferry.

Shuttles operate directly and quickly from Sea-Tac airport to the Anacortes ferry terminal and/or Roche Harbor. Island Airporter and Bellair Shuttle are two of the best, and maintain regular schedules. Costs are usually $40-$55 each way, and leave at specific times to reach the ferry. If this is your preferred travel method, be sure to coordinate the shuttle time with your flight times.
olympic peninsula and victoria to the san juan islands
If you’re thinking of combining a Roche Harbor visit with a tour around the Olympic Peninsula or Canada, give the San Juan Island Visitors Bureau (888.468.3701) a ring - their help will make it easy to the “double ferry” trip from Port Townsend to Keystone, up to Anacortes, then over to Friday Harbor; or get you from Victoria to San Juan Island.
walking/bicycling on to the ferry
A good way to avoid the long vehicle lines during the peak summer months, it’s easy to park and walk on. Shuttles run from Friday Harbor to Roche Harbor from mid-May to mid-September, and taxis run $20 each way for vans and passenger vehicles.
