Birdwatching at the Sculpture Park

The San Juan Island Sculpture Park at Roche Harbor Resort is one of the best places on San Juan Island to experience wildlife and nature. With over 20 acres of meadows, wetlands, and forests, the park provides a natural haven for the local animals alongside its outdoor art installations.

One of the most popular ways to explore the park’s wildlife is through the monthly bird walks, held on the first Wednesday of each month from April through October. These guided walks are a great opportunity for beginners and seasoned birders alike to connect with the rhythms of the island’s birdlife.

Birding Through the Seasons

  • Spring: Migratory birds arrive to nest and raise their clutches. It’s a season of vibrant colors as the plants burst to life. Songbirds find their mates and waterfowl forage in the pond while raptors soar overhead.
  • Summer: Birds can be spotted foraging throughout the park, especially in the early hours of the morning and during the late afternoon. In July and August the goldfinches (the Washington State bird) can be seen getting thistle seeds – quite the entertaining sight to watch them frolick for one of their favorite foods.
  • Fall: Juvenile birds have matured into adults and begin to undertake their seasonal migrations. It’s also a chance to catch late-season flowers and the shifting colors of the park.
  • Winter: Most birds migrate away, but some remain year-round, and others even come and stay for the winter. A variety of waterfowl, gulls, sparrows, robins, and finches can still be observed against the quieter backdrop of the park.

More Than Birds

Birding at the Sculpture Park often comes with surprise encounters with other wildlife:

  • A resident muskrat has called the pond home for the last few years and can occasionally be seen swimming or gathering vegetation.
  • Painted turtles sun themselves on logs in the warmer months.
  • Deer frequently wander the meadows and wood edges.
  • A diverse array of insects and pollinators add even more life to the landscape.

The mix of sculpture, scenery, and wildlife creates a unique environment. Every visit feels different and we invite you to enjoy a stroll through this amazing local treasure and experience it for yourself!
